Tourism refers to the movement of people across places and countries, outside their usual environment. This movement can be for a variety of purposes like entertainment, personal, professional, or business needs. In fact, it can be considered a social, economic, and cultural phenomenon, which entails the exchange of knowledge, ideas, cultures, languages, food, etc. It therefore plays a major role in boosting the economy of any country by creating jobs. Thus, aiding in the development of the infrastructures, and planting a sense of cultural exchange between citizens of the country and foreign nationals. However, many countries in the world are solely dependent on tourism for revenue. The jobs created by tourism are spread across different sectors in the service sector but indirectly create jobs in the agricultural, communication, health, and education sectors as well. Moreover, many tourists travel to explore destination cultures, rural life, local cultures, traditions, etc., which helps local shopkeepers, small restaurants, and stores. Hence, countries that depend on tourism for the major share of their economy invest a lot in improving infrastructural developments like highways, new roads, flyovers, and tunnels which positively impact the country's development and benefit its citizens. Better infrastructure leads to the smooth and safe flow of goods and services, leading to economic prosperity. Tourism has therefore largely impacted the transportation facilities across the globe as it is a major reason for many new airports, which have now contributed to the vital connectivity across the globe. This has helped the exposure of local businesses with access to the global market. Therefore, tourism launches the exchange of culture and tradition between tourists and citizens and, over the years, can bring a considerable change in the lifestyle, food habits, and culture of the countries. Exhibitions, conferences, and events organized for foreigners gain profits for the hosting nation.
Nevertheless, tourism can be majorly categorized into three groups; domestic tourism, inbound tourism, and outbound tourism. Domestic tourism refers to the activities when a visitor travels within his own country of residence, but outside their home of residence. Inbound tourism is when a visitor travels within the country, and Outbound tourism is when a visitor travels to a country overseas. It can be further categorized on the basis of the activity a visitor involves in their destination, which includes adventurous tourism, environmental tourism, food tourism, wellness tourism, health tourism, cultural tourism, historical tourism, recreational tourism, etc. This book will introduce the readers to the field of tourism and the fundamentals terms of it. It is precisely designed for readers or students with no prior experience related to tourism, and bring up a diversity of fundamental topics. By the end of the book, readers will get a basic idea on tourism and the key concepts involved.
