Library science can be defined as an interdisciplinary science integrating vast subjects like humanities, law and applied science incorporated to the study areas linked to libraries, the collection, organization, preservation and dissemination of information resources, and the political economy of information. Formerly Library science has incorporated Archival science as well. But the contrasting concept of "a library and an archive are comparatively new.'The whole concept includes a vast domain which includes the segregation and organizing of information resources in order to serve the requirements of selected user groups, manage the interaction of people with classification systems and technology, to understand how information is acquired, to carry out evaluation and apply this to people in and outside of libraries as well as cross-culturally. The training and education of people to start their careers in libraries, the ethics that guide library service and organization, the legal status of libraries and information resources, and the application side of computer technology used in documentation and records management are all key concepts Library science curriculum generally involves subjects like collection management, information systems and technology, cataloging and classification, preservation, reference, statistics, and management, as any other field library science is advancing by, including new areas, like database management, information architecture and knowledge management etc. Even though the terms library science, library and information science, and librarianship have almost the same context, they are distinctively used to enhance the conceptual knowledge and improve the "science" field aspects, hence upgrade the librarian profile. Library science can be interpreted as a multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary field that involves the use of the perspectives, practices, and management tools to libraries. A graduate level education in the field involves concepts and application of subjects like education and information science applied to library science. A bachelors or a masters degree holder in the field can work in both academic and public settings.
The reader will be introduced to the field of library sciences and its principles in this book. It is written specifically for readers or students who have no prior knowledge of library science and covers a wide range of core topics. By the end of the book, readers will understand the basic concepts of library science and the important principles involved.
